Pest Control in Canyon, TX

Canyon is the Randall County seat and home to West Texas A&M University, 12 miles from Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Panhandle Pest Protection serves Canyon homes from Amarillo with year-round plans that follow the High Plains calendar.

Canyon homes, High Plains calendar

Canyon sits at the junction of U.S. Highway 60 and Interstate 27 near the center of Randall County, south of Amarillo. It became the county seat when the county was organized in 1889, and a brick courthouse went up there in 1909. About 14,800 people lived in Canyon at the 2020 Census, and West Texas A&M University is based in town. Census Bureau estimates show that the median home was built in 1983, that about one in five homes went up in 2010 or later, and that nearly half of households rent.

One clarification for searchers: Canyon, Texas is not Canyon Lake. Canyon Lake is a lakeside community in Comal County in central Texas, hundreds of miles from here. This page is about Canyon in Randall County, in the Texas Panhandle; the city's ZIP code is 79015.

The Home Protection Plan brings six visits a year, about two months apart, for household pests including rats and mice, wasps and carpenter bees, spiders and non-wood-boring ants, along with earwigs, pill bugs, millipedes, centipedes, American and Palmetto roaches, stink bugs and silverfish. The Mosquito Reduction Plan is a separate option with nine visits from March through November.

Local conditions

What sets Canyon apart

Canyon's economy has long rested on wheat, grain sorghum, dairy, livestock and the university. Where grain, feed and livestock are grown, stored or handled, rats and mice have food close by, and as nights cool a warm building offers the rest. That is worth keeping in mind for homes on the edge of town.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park lies 12 miles east of Canyon on State Highway 217. Weekly arbovirus reports from the Texas Department of State Health Services, which are preliminary data, list West Nile virus in Randall County mosquito samples in 2023, 2024 and 2025, and human cases in the county in years including 2023 and 2025. Most people infected never develop symptoms, but it is a reason to take mosquitoes seriously.

The City of Amarillo says its mosquito program operates within Amarillo's city limits, and its own page notes that Canyon has a separate program. Ask the City of Canyon what its program treats. Mosquito reduction at your own property is a separate matter, and it is what the Mosquito Reduction Plan is built for.

Through the year

A year of pests in Canyon

Canyon shares the High Plains climate: about 20 inches of rain a year, hot summers and cold winters.

  1. April and May

    Carpenter bees, wasps

Carpenter bees leave the tunnels where they spent the winter and look for bare, weathered or unpainted wood: fascia, eaves, railings, fence rails and decks. They often reuse old tunnels, so the same board can be a target year after year. Paper wasp queens are starting nests under eaves and porch ceilings at the same time.

  2. June to August

Mosquitoes, black widows and other spiders, pill bugs, earwigs

Warm nights and thunderstorms keep mosquitoes breeding wherever water stands. Black widows build low, irregular webs in dark, sheltered spots such as sheds, garages, woodpiles and under stones, while pill bugs and earwigs hide under mulch and debris by day.

  3. September and October

    Rats, mice, millipedes, centipedes

As the weather cools, millipedes and centipedes may head indoors and rodents move toward warmth. Fall is the time to seal gaps around pipes, vents and door frames, and to move firewood and stored feed away from the house.

  4. November to March

Rats, mice, American roaches, silverfish, spiders

This is indoor season. American roaches prefer dark, damp spots in basements and attics, silverfish stay low and close to moisture, and spiders settle into quiet corners. The plan keeps visiting through the coldest months.

Is this page for Canyon, Texas or Canyon Lake?

Canyon, Texas: the Randall County seat, south of Amarillo (the city's ZIP code is 79015). Canyon Lake is a separate community in Comal County, hundreds of miles away in central Texas. If you live in Canyon in the Panhandle, this is your page. Enter your ZIP code in the quote form and we will confirm service for your address.

Are carpenter bees covered, and when do they show up?

Carpenter bees are on the Home Protection Plan's covered list. Adults usually emerge in April and May, favor bare or weathered wood, and reuse tunnels from earlier seasons. Painted or pressure-treated wood is harder for them to use, so exposed fascia, railings and fence rails are worth a look each spring.

Who handles mosquitoes in Canyon?

Not the City of Amarillo, which says its program operates within Amarillo's city limits and does not spray private property. The City of Amarillo's mosquito page says Canyon has its own program, so ask the City of Canyon what it treats. The Mosquito Reduction Plan is the option for your own property, with nine visits from March through November.

Why are rats and mice a concern near grain and feed?

They follow food. Grain, feed and livestock operations offer it year-round, and buildings offer warmth as temperatures fall. The Home Protection Plan covers rats and mice with visits all year. On your side, store feed and pet food in sealed containers, stack firewood neatly and away from walls, and seal any gap a pencil could slide into.

What are the little gray bugs that curl into a ball?

Those are pill bugs, also called roly-polies. They spend the day in damp, dark places under stones, logs and leaf litter, and feed at night on decaying material such as mulch and grass clippings. They are mainly a nuisance when they wander indoors. Pill bugs, earwigs, millipedes and centipedes are all on the Home Protection Plan's covered list.
